Accept Online Payments with Noda

Add 2000+ banks for instant Payins & Payouts and scale globally with ease!

The information in this review was gathered from the Volt.io website and public sources as of June 2025. Details may change over time.

What is Volt.io?

Volt.io is a London-based fintech company founded in October 2019 by Steffen Vollert and Tom Greenwood, alongside Jordan Lawrence, who stepped down as Co‑Founder and Chief Growth Officer in August 2024. Volt.io operates a real-time payments network that aggregates domestic account-to-account (A2A) rails across 80+ markets into a single API.

The company has raised millions in funding so far, including a $23.5 million Series A and a $60 million Series B, with backing from investors like EQT Ventures, Augmentum Fintech, and IVP.

That said, Volt’s infrastructure-heavy model can feel overkill for smaller merchants. If you’re looking for something lighter, especially for e-commerce payments or in-store QR payments, Noda (which leans fully into Open Banking) might get you live faster and for a lower cost per transaction.

Looking for a simpler alternative? Noda offers real-time Open Banking payments across Europe and the UK, with transparent pricing from only 0.1% per transaction and no setup fees.

Industry Coverage

Volt works best for businesses that handle a large number of payments and need those payments to go through quickly. According to its website, Volt is used in industries like gaming, crypto, and financial services. Volt offers tools that help with real-time payments, verifying bank accounts, and sending payouts, features that are especially useful in these industries.

How Does Volt Payment Work?

Volt supports one core payment method: real-time bank transfers, known as “Pay by Bank”. This is available in all active markets, including the UK, through integrations with domestic payment rails like Faster Payments, SEPA Instant, Pix, and PayTo.

Volt Payments

Volt offers a small set of core payment tools focused on real-time bank transfers:

  • Instant Payments: Accept real-time bank transfers at checkout
  • Refunds: Send instant refunds directly to the customer's bank accounts
  • Payouts: Transfer funds instantly to users or partners
  • Pay by Link: Generate secure payment links to share via email, SMS, or chat

At this stage, Volt doesn’t offer payment links, which may be a limitation for merchants looking to take payments via email, messaging apps, or social channels without a full checkout flow.

Is Volt Payment Legit?

Volt is licensed to hold customer funds and follows strict safeguarding rules set by financial regulators in the countries where it operates. It does not rely on deposit insurance schemes; instead, it uses fund segregation, which means all customer funds are kept in separate safeguarding accounts at regulated banks.

This safeguarding process applies to all funds held in Volt Accounts provided under Volt’s Electronic Money Institution (EMI) licence in the UK and its Payment Institution (PI) licence in Poland.

How Can You Integrate Volt?

Volt gives you a few different ways to connect, depending on how hands-on you want to be:

E-commerce Plugins

If you’re running a typical e-commerce setup, the fastest route is through one of their pre-built plugins.

As of 2025, supported plugins include:

  • Shopify, Shopware 5 & 6 (available directly)
  • Adobe Commerce (Magento), WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Salesforce Commerce Cloud (available via partners)

 Direct Integration

Merchants integrating directly use Fuzebox, Volt’s merchant portal. The process involves:

  • Creating a merchant profile in Fuzebox (Volt sends an email invite)
  • Generating customer and application credentials to access the Volt API
  • Setting up digital signature keys for secure processing of refunds and payouts
  • Configuring callback URLs to receive payment, refund, and report notifications
  • Using the API to integrate products like Instant Payments, Refunds, and Payouts

Integration via Technical Service Providers (TSPs)

For merchants using a TSP, Volt supports pre-built connections with platforms such as:

  • BridgerPay
  • Norbr
  • IXO Pay
  • Praxis
  • Payment IQ
  • Primer
  • EcoPayz
  • SEPA Express
  • Optty
  • Paymentwall

In this case, the TSP handles most of the technical setup. The merchant only needs to enable Volt products through the partner interface and generate credentials in Fuzebox.

Integration via Payment Service Providers (PSPs)

Volt also integrates with several PSPs, including:

  • Worldpay
  • Worldline
  • PayByPago
  • Noveba
  • Onyx
  • Decta
  • ElPaso

If you're working with one of Volt’s third-party PSP partners, the Volt setup is already built into their system. In that case, you’ll first need to integrate the PSP into your own platform, then simply enable Volt as a payment method within the PSP dashboard. From there, you can fine-tune things like notification settings in Fuzebox, Volt’s backend dashboard.

All merchants using Volt—regardless of how they integrate—get access to:

  • Fuzebox: Used to generate credentials, manage refunds, payouts, and configure fraud rules via Circuit Breaker
  • Connect: A cash management platform that tracks payment status, marks orders as paid, and supports instant refunds

Volt.io Fees

Volt doesn’t list prices publicly, and that’s because it’s all tailored. Your costs will depend on where you're based, how much you process, and which features you use. There’s usually a one-off setup fee, and depending on your agreement, you might also see monthly minimums kick in.

You’ll pay per successful transaction for core services like Pay by Bank, plus extra for things like refunds, payouts, fraud tools (Circuit Breaker), virtual IBANs, and account verification (Verify).

While Volt does not support card or wallet payments (so there are no interchange or scheme fees), there may still be additional charges for things like FX conversions or account-related services. Everything gets mapped out in your Order Form after an initial consultation, so the real cost picture only becomes clear once Volt understands your setup.

For many businesses, this lack of transparency can be a blocker.

With Noda, pricing is upfront from just 0.1% per transaction, with no setup fees or monthly minimums.

Settlement & Withdrawals

Volt settles funds by batching all available payments into scheduled or manual transfers from your Volt Account to your designated bank account. By default, these automatic settlement sweeps occur hourly, but merchants can request less frequent schedules (daily, weekly) or set minimum balance thresholds per currency (e.g. only settle once £10,000 or €20,000 is reached).

Alternatively, you can initiate on-demand settlements anytime through the Fuzebox portal. Each settlement includes a report and is confirmed with a unique batch ID and payment reference for reconciliation. There are no additional fees for settlement, and funds are sent via local real-time rails like Faster Payments or SEPA Instant.

Support & Onboarding

Volt keeps things pretty streamlined when it comes to support. You’ll mostly be working through email, and there’s no public mention of live chat or phone support at this stage. It’s likely that dedicated account managers are available for key clients or enterprise-level merchants, though this isn’t clearly outlined in their public materials. That said, their documentation is solid. You’ll get clear step-by-step guides through Fuzebox, their merchant dashboard, covering everything from setup to payout configuration.

Customer Reviews & Feedback

Trustpilot

Volt.io has a 2.5‑star Trustpilot rating based on 5 reviews, and all are one-star complaints. Complaints typically mention slow support, failed deposits, or missing funds, but it’s unclear how representative these are of the actual merchant experience.

There’s also very limited public feedback from merchants, and just one case study available on Volt’s website.

Is Volt Right for Your Business?

Volt is clearly built for high-risk, high-volume industries like gambling, crypto, forex, and other sectors that require robust infrastructure for real-time bank payments across global markets. If you’re processing thousands of transactions per month in places like Europe, Brazil, or Australia, and you’ve got a dev team or a PSP partner to help with the setup, Volt’s global real-time payment infrastructure can deliver.

However, for other businesses, especially those in retail, D2C, or services, Volt might feel overly complex. The onboarding process involves multiple steps, and public reviews are limited. Additionally, there’s limited transparency around fees and almost no plug-and-play integrations for smaller platforms.

Volt.io Pros And Cons

✅ Pros

  • Strong global coverage

  • Access to advanced tools

  • Custom settlement settings and fraud protection features

❌Cons

  • No transparent pricing or cost calculator

  • Not ideal for smaller businesses or merchants without dedicated tech teams
